Mod Podge Mania!

June 9, 2013

We have been doing a little remodeling around the house lately and changed our colors.  I love the song “Home” by Phillip Phillips and I knew I wanted to turn the lyrics into art to match the new color scheme.  After seeing so many ideas on Pinterest I decided that the best and least expensive way would be to Mod Podge it.  I have never used this medium and was eager to get started.  I had a canvas already and just sprayed it grey to match the new colors in the house.  I got a large book of scrapbook paper at Michael’s with colors that would match and I borrowed a Cricut from a friend to cut the letters, and I was all set to get crafty.

“Home”

Phillip Phillips

Hold on, to me as we go

As we roll down this unfamiliar road

And although this wave is stringing us along

Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear

Don’t pay no mind to the demons

They fill you with fear

The trouble it might drag you down

If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear

Don’t pay no mind to the demons

They fill you with fear

The trouble it might drag you down

If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

mod podge

Mod Podge is a lot like Elmer’s Glue.  I am not sure if Elmer’s would make a good substitute, but the consistency, tackiness and smell are identical.  There are many different kinds of Mod Podge, but I just used the classic matte.

I sprayed my canvas grey to match our decor and got blue and yellow paper to match for the lettering.

This was also my first time using a Cricut.  I played around with different fonts, but ended up using the classic font.  I used different sizes and colors for the letters to break it up a bit so it didn’t look all the same.

mod podge canvas

I placed the letters on the canvas to check for sizing issues and spacing, then started the Mod Podge.  I spread a thin layer on with a paint brush, then added the first words and added another layer on top to seal it.

It was a little tricky to get the letters perfectly straight, but I like that some of the letters and words are a little off center, it makes it unique.

It didn’t take long to dry and it was ready to hang in just an hour!  I love it and it looks perfect hanging next to a picture collage of family photos above our stair case!

Crafting hand made lotion bars…

March 10, 2013

It has been a while since I have posted a craft that I have made.  I was getting antsy and had too much coffee today, so I took a trip to Michael”s to see what kind of trouble I could get into.  I love the store Lush and all of the gorgeous, hand made soaps and yummy goodies that they have.  It can get a little expensive, so after sifting through my many pins on Pinterest, I found a recipe for lotion bars.  This was by far one of the easiest crafts I have made yet.  You just measure and pour the ingredients and in a few minutes, maybe 10-15, I had massage/lotion bars cooling on my counter tops!

I took a trip to Chuck’s, my local all natural market, and found the bees wax pearls, essential oils, lavender pods and rose petals.  I then made a stop at Michael’s and got the molds, glitter and all natural bees wax bar.  I had coconut oil and olive oil.

Over a double boiler over medium heat and 2 inches of water, I measured 1/2 cup of bees wax pearls, 1/2 cup of coconut oil and 1/2 cup of olive oil.  The bees wax pearls are a lot easier to measure out, as the block of bees wax is hard to cut and grate.  I think I will use the pearls from now on.

After everything is melted add about 25-30 drops of essential oil.  I used lavender and lemongrass.

Once every thing was melted, letting it cool slightly, I poured it into the molds, then sprinkled in the lavender pods, rose petals and just a little bit of the irridescent glitter.

Once they were cooled and hardened, I popped them out onto parchment paper and wrapped them up.

They are heavenly!  The lavender pods give it a nice texture, exfoliating almost, but may be a tad too scratchy to use directly on delicate areas.  I just hold the bar in my hand and let it melt a little and then apply it to dry hands, feet and any where else that needs hydration.  The combinations are endless and I can’t wait to try different fragrances!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night….

December 25, 2011

Wow, what a great Christmas!  In the blink of an eye, another Christmas has come and gone and we will soon start another new year.   As I reflect back on the year, I can’t help but feel blessed!    I am surrounded by amazing family and friends and exciting job that I look forward to each day…but I think to be able to live a fun and creative life everyday is the best gift of all.

Another tradition of ours, reading stories by the light of the Christmas tree. This years selections were "The Polar Express" and "The Night Before Christmas" then it was off to bed, with sugar plums dancing in their heads.
