C is for Caterpillar and Chameleon…

March 3, 2013

Along with cats this week, we also learned all about caterpillars and chameleons too! We used the beautiful books by Eric Carle to create and inspire our art projects.

C is for Caterpillar

Story Time

books for preschoolers

We read “Ten Little Caterpillars” by Bill Martin Jr.  This is a wonderful book all about the different kinds of caterpillars and counting.  At the very end the book tells you the name of each caterpillar and what kind of butterfly or moth they will turn into.

And we read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle.  Every child loves this book, it also helps with counting as the caterpillar eats many different types of fruits.

 Sing with Me

The Fuzzy Little Caterpillar

(to the tune of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”)

The fuzzy little caterpillar

Curled up on a leaf,

Spun her little chrysallis

And then fell fast asleep.

While she was sleeping,

She dreamed that she could fly,

And later when she woke up,

She was a butterfly!

Craft Time

We made hand print caterpillars just like “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” complete with his nice, big green leaf that he eats to make himself feel better!

C is for Chameleon

Story Time

books for preschoolers

We read “The Mixed Up Chameleon” by Eric Carle.  This is a great book that teaches the lesson that it is ok to just be yourself.  The chameleon is not happy and he wants to be like other animals.  He gets very mixed up and finds out in the end that being himself is beautiful.

Sing with Me

Are you a chameleon?

(to the tune: “Do Your Ears Hang Low”)

Do you have green skin?

Do you shed the skin your in?

Can you change the color, too?

Turn from green to red to blue.

Do you live among the trees?

Blending in with sticks and leaves.

Then you are a chameleon!

Craft Time

We made a template based on the “Mixed Up Chameleon” book by Eric Carle and I cut up colorful crepe paper that the children glued to the chameleon’s body.

Callie Cat

(to the tune of: “Yankee Doodle”)

Callie Cat lives in the country.

Callie likes canoeing.

Callie likes to wear a C no matter what

she’s doing.

Callie rides in her canoe. Connie Cow

climbs in too.

Callie says: “Meow, look out!” and

Connie Cow says, “Moo-moo!”

(to the tune: “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little leprechaun
Dressed in green,
The tiniest man
That you have seen.
If you ever catch me, so it’s told,
I’ll give you my big pot of gold.

I’m a Little Shamrock

(to the tune: “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little shamrock
look at me
oh what color can I be

If you said that I was
the color green
then stand right up and YELL
YIPPEE!

Craft Time

We had painted a rainbow with the children’s hand prints outside the week before.  I then cut around the rainbow to add to our bulletin board as well as a large pot of gold and hand print shamrocks.

For letter R week, we had made rainbows out of paper plates, cotton balls and colorful streamers.  I left these up as a part of our St. Patrick’s Day decor.
