Z is for Zebra and Zoo….

January 18, 2013

Our classroom was a zoo this week as we learned all about the letter Zz.  We had so much fun learning a song about Zelda Zebra and making a fun hand print craft to go along with it.  We became zoo animals and acted out parts of the story “Zoo Looking” and ended the week with a special Zebra Cake snack too!

Read with Me

We read “Zack the Lazy Zebra” by Wendy Cheyette Lewison, “Zoo Looking” by Mem Fox and “Animal Strike at the Zoo” by Karma Wilson.  These are all fun books to read aloud that teach about zoo animals and the letter Z.

We made these fun zoo masks out of Zoo Pals paper plates.  We cut the eyes out of the plates and glued a popsicle stick handle onto them.  As I read the book “Zoo Looking”  the children listened for when I read the name of their animal and then acted out the part of that animal.

A is for Alligator and Apples….

January 11, 2013

Happy 2013 to everyone!  After taking a few weeks off from curriculum for the holidays, it was back to work this week.  We started the new year with the letter Aa.  We had so much fun learning all about this letter with fun songs and crafts all about alligators and apples.

First he’ll teach them letter A.

Story Time

apple book for preschoolers

We read Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins, a fun counting book with lots of catchy repetition that the children quickly catch onto as you read aloud.  We also read Apples for Everyone by Jill Esbaum.  This book takes a look at how an apple grows from seed to tree with beautiful photographs and  the story shows all of the many uses for apples.

Craft Time

We made apple prints by slicing an apple in half and dipping it in paint and stamping it onto card stock.  This really gave the children an up close look at the inside of apples and the seeds inside.

Sing with Me

We sang the letter A song from my ABC Flip Chart by Scholastic.  These flip charts are such a great resource with fun and easy to sing songs.

Story Time

We read There’s An Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer.  This story tells the antics of  a young boy stalling to go to bed by insisting that there is an alligator under his bed.

We also read The Adventures of Abby Alligator by Maria Fleming from the AlphaTales book.

Craft Time

We made letter A alligators to go along with our story.  The children painted a piece of card stock green, then I cut it into the shape of an A.

Christmas in our classroom….

December 28, 2012

We were busy little elves the last few weeks and our class had so much fun making crafts for the holiday season!  We even had Santa himself visit our school!  We all gathered together and sang Christmas songs and got a picture with Santa too!

A Cookie for Santa

poem for santa

We made a special cookie that we painted and cut a bite out of, then glued it to a holiday plate and added a cute poem to go with it.

Reindeer Food

We can’t forget Santa’s reindeer, they work hard too.  To make this special treat just mix oats and glitter.  The magic glitter will sparkle in the moonlight and attract the reindeer to your yard.

Hand Print Santa’s

santa handprints

For the parent’s gifts, we made hand print Santa’s on a pot holder.  I painted each section of the child’s hand a different color.  The thumb and bottom of the hand I painted red, the palm I painted a skin tone and the fingers white.  After it was dry, I added fur around the hat, a pom pom, mustache and eyes.  A keepsake that parents will treasure for years to come!

Gift Bags

We made cute foot print reindeer gift bags to put the Santa pot holders in to give to the parents.  They children wiggled and giggled as I painted their feet and toes for this craft.
