The week leading up to Christmas we had a gingerbread themed week. We read a new book everyday about gingerbread, learned a fun song to sing during circle time and made some fun crafts. Our door to the classroom even turned into a gingerbread door decorated with sweet treats. We ended the week with a themed party and cookie decorating.
Sing With Me
(to the tune of Frere Jaques)
Yum, yum, yum
Yum, yum, yum
I like gingerbread, I like gingerbread
In my tum, in my tum!
We read The Gingerbread Man by Barbra Mc Clintock. I had several children take turns coming up to act out the story using masks while I read the story.
We read The Gingerbread Girl Goes Animal Crackers by Lisa Campbell Ernst. This is a really cute story of the gingerbread girl and the adventure she has when she gets a box of animal crackers for her birthday.
For snack we had animal crackers to go along with our story.
We also read: The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett, Gingerbread Mouse by Katy Bratun and Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup. The boys especially loved the the story about the pirates!
We painted a gingerbread cut out and then sprinkled ground ginger onto the paint to give it a spicy gingerbread smell.
We decorated the gingerbread men with buttons and glitter and added the children’s pictures to each one. We made and added glittery candy canes, candy and sparkly gumdrops to our fun, holiday door.
We played the game “Where is the gingerbread man hiding”. We had the children hide their eyes and I hid the man under one of the gingerbread houses and one by one they had to guess where he was.
We had lots of fun decorating gingerbread cookies with lots of frosting and candies! We also had chocolate milk and added gingerbread marshmallows too!
