Umbrella Bird…

February 27, 2012

U is for Umbrella Bird!  We learned all about this unusual bird today!  He has a fancy crest of feathers on his head just like an umbrella. We had a lot of fun singing and reading about this fun and fancy bird!

Uppity Umbrella Bird

(to the tune of Frere Jaques)

Uppity Umbrella Bird, Uppity Umbrella Bird,

U says uh, uh, uh, uh

Umbrella, up and under; upside-down and Uncle,

U says uh, uh, uh, uh

We read Umbrella Bird’s Umbrella by Heather Feldman from the Alphatales book.  I love this book, it has been so helpful and useful this year.

This is our interpretation of the umbrella bird.  We made the puppet out of a paper bag, but we made our birds a little bit more colorful!

Terrific Turtles…

February 21, 2012

Tuesday was turtle day!  We learned all about turtles and the letter Tt.  We learned all about turtles and why they have a protective shell…then we pretended to be turtles and curl up inside our own shells.

We sang a cute song about a turtle named Mr. Box.  This is one of my favorites that I have been singing for years.

Snappy Turtle

There was a snappy turtle, his name was Mr. Box

He swam in the river, he climbed up on the rocks (make swimming motions and climbing motions)

He snapped at the ladybug (clap hands together)

He snapped at the bee (clap hands together)

He snapped at the firefly (clap hands together)

He snapped at me (clap hands together)

He caught the ladybug (clap hands together)

He caught the bee (clap hands together)

He caught the firefly (clap hands together)

But he didn’t, no he didn’t catch me!

We read Turtle Splash A Countdown at the Pond by Cathryn Falwell

Turtle Splash is a beautiful book all about a pond in the forest.  Not only do you see turtles, but you also can see deer, bull frogs, ducks, rabbits and squirrels and learn all about life in the forest.

More books to read: The Foolish Tortoise by Richard Buckley and How the Turtle Got His Shell and other stories from around the world

We then made turtles during craft time out of half of a paper plate.

T is for Tiger and celebrating President’s Day…

February 20, 2012

Today we learned all about the letter Tt and tigers.  We read a book that gave some great facts about the tiger; what they eat, where they live, what they look like.  We sang a song and then made a craft too.  We also incorporated Presidents Day a little bit into our day as well.  We discussed what the president’s job is, read a poem about Lincoln and Washington and made Lincoln masks and presidential badges too.

What I Saw at the Zoo

Oh I went to the zoo and what did I see?

I saw a great big tiger, lookin’ at me

He went Raaar, raaaar, He went Raaar, raaar

He went Raaaar, raaar, raar, And that’s what he said to me!

Celebrating President’s Day!

Presidential Poem

February is the month

For us to celebrate

The birthdays of two famous men

Who make our country great.

George Washington was our first president;

He was the best that he could be.

Abraham Lincoln was a kind president

Who made every American free.

This mask was made out of a paper plate with the middle cut out.  Then we glued a black paper top hat and cotton balls to it to make the beard.
