Little Ladybugs…

May 26, 2013

We had a great week learning all about the letter Ll and Ladybugs!  We had so much fun learning songs, making paper plate ladybugs and reading stories all about these cute little bugs.  I found an adorable song from Sesame Street that I remembered from my own childhood.  We watched “The Ladybug’s Picnic” and sang along, click here to listen to the song too.

Story Time

We read two real stories all about the life cycles of ladybugs.  “A Ladybug’s Life” by John Himmelman  and “Ladybugs” by Mia Posada take a look at the many changes ladybugs make during their lives.

We also read two more books on ladybugs, “Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy” by David Soman and Jacky Davis and “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle.

Sing With Me

The Itsy Bitsy Ladybug

(to the tune: “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”)

The itsy bitsy ladybug climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the ladybug out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy ladybug climbed up the spout again

I’m a Little Ladybug

(to the tune: “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little ladybug on the go,

Landing on an arm, then an elbow.

See me fly around and around your hand,

Then watch as on your thumb I land.

Five Little Ladybugs

Five little ladybugs sitting in a tree,

The first one said, “I’m glad I’m me”

The second one said, “I feel great too”,

The third one said, “How about you?”

The fourth one said, “It’s time to fly away”,

The fifth one said, “We’ll talk another day.”

Arts and Crafts

paper plate lady bug craft

We started our craft by painting paper plates red.  Then we cut the plate in half and used a brass brad to attach them to a black circle, added a head, antennas and black spots.

D is for Dinosaur….

May 19, 2013

Along with ducks this week we also learned all about dinosaurs, with a fun song and crafts as well.  We even had a dinosaur march around the room, stomping and roaring like dinosaurs.

Sing With Me

The Dino Pokey

(to the tune: “The Hokey Pokey”)

Put your claws in, put your claws out.

Put your claws in and scratch them all about.

Do the “dino pokey” and turn yourself around.

That’s what it’s all about!

continue with:

Put your teeth in…chomp them all about.

Put your feet in…stomp them all about.

Put your tail in…wag it all about.

Story Time

dinosaur books

We read “Stomp” by Ruth Paul and “Dinosaurs Galore” by Giles Andreae.  “Dinosaurs Galore” takes a look at all the different kinds of dinosaurs from big to small.  We then talked about what it would be like if we saw a real dinosaur?  What would they feel like?  What colors would they be?

Craft Time

dinosaur craft

We made dinosaur foot prints.  The children took our dinosaurs from the science center, dipped their feet into paint and had them march across the paper.

We painted wooden cut outs of dinosaurs and after they were dry we added tiny google eyes too.

D is for Dog too!

We also made adorable paper plate dogs to go along with the letter Dd.  The ears are attached with brass brads to make them go up and down.

Little ducks all in a row….

We had a great week learning all about ducks and the letter Dd.  We sang, made a craft and read books all about these feathery, floating animals.  We watched a short video on ducks too!  Click here to watch real ducks and here to see a fun song about ducks by Elmo!

Sing With Me

Quack Quack Went the Little Yellow Duck

(to the tune: “Gung, Gung Went the Little Green Frog”)

Quack, quack went the little yellow duck one day.

Quack, quack went the little yellow duck.

Quack, quack went the little yellow duck one day.

And his feet went,

Flip, flap, flop.

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks went out to play,

Over the hills and far away.

Mother duck said, “Quack, quack, quack”

And only three little ducks came waddling back.

*continue until you get to no little ducks then sing the following verse:

Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hills and far away
The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back.

We used my felt finger play glove to sing “Five Little Ducks” and the children got to take turns taking a duck off as we sang.
