We read “Do Pirates Take Baths?” by Kathy Tucker,  “Pajama Pirates” by Andrew Kramer and  “Pirate Pete” by Kim Kennedy.

Arts and Crafts

We made pirates out of paper plates and skin tone paint.  We then added a bandana, google eye, and an eye patch to complete our pirate face.

I used 2 of the 9ft. garlands to wrap and hot glue around the foam wreath form.

I used 5 pairs of flip flops in a size 5/6, the smallest they had and embellished them with foil stars and wire spangles.

After I glued the flip flops down, I added more spangles by just poking the wire into the foam all around the wreath.

It is a bit gaudy, but that is what makes it fun and unique.  Perfect to welcome guests this summer!

Arts and Crafts

We painted kangaroo shapes which I cut out after they were dry.

This adorable owl print I picked up at Ikea for $9.99.

The laser cut frames were a steal and I had to get them now, sometimes when stores put things on clearance that can be your last chance.  Michael’s had many sizes and shapes to choose from.  From 4″x4″ to 16″x20″.  The possibilities are endless with these frames.

This was the perfect Saturday night craft project!  My husband even got in on it and helped me paint a few.

They look so cute next to the owl print!  A super easy, inexpensive craft project.

Mod Podge is a lot like Elmer’s Glue.  I am not sure if Elmer’s would make a good substitute, but the consistency, tackiness and smell are identical.  There are many different kinds of Mod Podge, but I just used the classic matte.

I sprayed my canvas grey to match our decor and got blue and yellow paper to match for the lettering.

This was also my first time using a Cricut.  I played around with different fonts, but ended up using the classic font.  I used different sizes and colors for the letters to break it up a bit so it didn’t look all the same.

I placed the letters on the canvas to check for sizing issues and spacing, then started the Mod Podge.  I spread a thin layer on with a paint brush, then added the first words and added another layer on top to seal it.

It was a little tricky to get the letters perfectly straight, but I like that some of the letters and words are a little off center, it makes it unique.

It didn’t take long to dry and it was ready to hang in just an hour!  I love it and it looks perfect hanging next to a picture collage of family photos above our stair case!

The Squirrel

These are the brown leaves fluttering down.

We read “Nuts to You!” by Lois Ehlert. This was a fun story all about a mischievous squirrel who is on the hunt for nuts!

We made paper walnuts to go along with our story.  The children painted brown paper and I cut the nuts in half and added a brass brad so the shell can open and close.

I Love Pasta

Noodles and twists are but a few.

We read “More Spaghetti I Say!” by Rita Golden Gelman.  I love this story and have had it a long time.  It’s a fun tale all about a funny monkey who stuffs himself with spaghetti.

For our noodle theme, we made noodle necklaces.  The children colored them with markers and then they strung them onto ribbon to make a necklace.

N is for Nest

We read “My Nest is Best”by P.D. Eastman.  This is a fun interactive tale all about a boastful bird who is proud of his nest making skills.

Story Time

We read the fun story “We’re Going on a Lion Hunt” by Joe Mathieu.  This story is similar to the song and book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.  The children loved this story and helped act it out as I read.  And we read the beautiful adaptation of Aesop’s fable “The Lion and the Mouse” by Jerry Pinkney.  This story tells an amazing lesson that even the meek and small are capable of greatness.

We made hand print lions by printing the children’s hands in a circle then adding the face in the middle.

We had a great week learning all about the letter Ll and Ladybugs!  We had so much fun learning songs, making paper plate ladybugs and reading stories all about these cute little bugs.  I found an adorable song from Sesame Street that I remembered from my own childhood.  We watched “The Ladybug’s Picnic” and sang along, click here to listen to the song too.

Story Time

We read two real stories all about the life cycles of ladybugs.  “A Ladybug’s Life” by John Himmelman  and “Ladybugs” by Mia Posada take a look at the many changes ladybugs make during their lives.

We also read two more books on ladybugs, “Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy” by David Soman and Jacky Davis and “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle.

We started our craft by painting paper plates red.  Then we cut the plate in half and used a brass brad to attach them to a black circle, added a head, antennas and black spots.

Story Time

We read “Stomp” by Ruth Paul and “Dinosaurs Galore” by Giles Andreae.  “Dinosaurs Galore” takes a look at all the different kinds of dinosaurs from big to small.  We then talked about what it would be like if we saw a real dinosaur?  What would they feel like?  What colors would they be?

Craft Time

We made dinosaur foot prints.  The children took our dinosaurs from the science center, dipped their feet into paint and had them march across the paper.

We painted wooden cut outs of dinosaurs and after they were dry we added tiny google eyes too.

D is for Dog too!

We also made adorable paper plate dogs to go along with the letter Dd.  The ears are attached with brass brads to make them go up and down.

Snack Time

We had many parents bring in a special snack for our class on Friday.  D is also for doughnut!  What a sweet treat to end our week!

We used my felt finger play glove to sing “Five Little Ducks” and the children got to take turns taking a duck off as we sang.

We read “10 Little Rubber Ducks” by Eric Carle, “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey and “Have You Seen My Duckling?” by Nancy Tafuri.

Craft Time

We made paper plate ducks just like the rubber ducks from “10 Little Rubber Ducks’  The feet are actually star shapes that we glued to the duck.
