S is for spaghetti…

We have started the alphabet this week with the letter S.  We had so much fun with spaghettti:  touching it, painting with it and using it with a hand eye/fine motor exercise.

Sing with Me

On Top of Spaghetti

On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

We took cooked spaghetti and dipped it into paint and made  spaghetti process art.

Small Group

For our small group activities the children took uncooked spaghetti and poked it through the holes of a strainer.  This simple activity was great for working on their fine motor skills.

They loved squishing and squeezing the cooked spaghetti!  The children said it felt like worms!

Snack Time

For our Fun Friday snack time Ms. Lia brought in her snow cone machine and we all had a special treat to end the week.  And a parent brought in cupcakes for us to decorate like adorable puppies!  We had a great week!

My family…

This week we talked all about our families.  Who is in your family?  Who lives in your house?  I asked those questions and the children loved talking and sharing  stories with the class about the people they love.

We read “Full, Full, Full of Love” by Trish Cooke.  This story follows a little boy at his grandmas house as they prepare for a big dinner with the extended family.

“Buzz” by Janet S. Wong takes a look at a typical busy day a family has getting up and ready for their regular routines, buzzing along like busy bees.

We made hand print family trees by painting the children’s hands for the leaves and arm for the trunk.  When they were dry, I added the family members by writing them onto the “leaves”

We also made “Who lives in my house?” diagrams.  The children added the colored square that represented the people and pets that live in their house.

Small Group

After going over and reviewing scissor safety, we have been busy strengthening our fine motor skills by cutting with scissors.  The children have been doing a great job with the “one snip strips” and next we will move on to the “two snip strips”, zig zag and wavy lines.

Our bulletin board has transformed for fall!  We love the “Apple Tree” finger play and I thought it would be a cute addition as a bulletin board for the fall season.

Celebrating National Teddy Bear Day!

Last week we celebrated National Teddy Bear Day!  Every child was encouraged to bring in their special teddy bear to share the day with.  The children loved giving their bears a tour around the room and showing them what they do in school.

We read “Big Smelly Bear” by Britta Teckentrup.  This is a silly story all about a stubborn bear who won’t take a bath!  With a little help from a fluffy, clean bear, he learns that it is ok to smell good and get clean.

We made our own “smelly bears” by mixing ginger into our brown paint and painting a bear template.

We added google eyes and a pom pom nose to complete our bears.

go away big green monster

We also read a classroom favorite, “Go Away Big Green Monster!” by Ed Emberley.  This story shows the progress of the green monster.  With each page you turn, you build the monster adding a nose, mouth, teeth eyes etc., then the book says: “I’m not afraid of you, go away!”  each page after that takes away parts to the monster and then he disappears.  The class loved this book and asked me to read it again and again!

We made our own big green monsters by making paint blob pictures with purple and green paint, and smooshing it between cardstock.

We then added the parts of the monster just like in the book, big green nose, yellow eyes, red mouth and white teeth.
