Mod Podge Mania!

We have been doing a little remodeling around the house lately and changed our colors.  I love the song “Home” by Phillip Phillips and I knew I wanted to turn the lyrics into art to match the new color scheme.  After seeing so many ideas on Pinterest I decided that the best and least expensive way would be to Mod Podge it.  I have never used this medium and was eager to get started.  I had a canvas already and just sprayed it grey to match the new colors in the house.  I got a large book of scrapbook paper at Michael’s with colors that would match and I borrowed a Cricut from a friend to cut the letters, and I was all set to get crafty.

“Home”

Phillip Phillips

Hold on, to me as we go

As we roll down this unfamiliar road

And although this wave is stringing us along

Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear

Don’t pay no mind to the demons

They fill you with fear

The trouble it might drag you down

If you get lost, you can always be found

Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

Settle down, it’ll all be clear

Don’t pay no mind to the demons

They fill you with fear

The trouble it might drag you down

If you get lost, you can always be found
Just know you’re not alone

Cause I’m going to make this place your home

mod podge

Mod Podge is a lot like Elmer’s Glue.  I am not sure if Elmer’s would make a good substitute, but the consistency, tackiness and smell are identical.  There are many different kinds of Mod Podge, but I just used the classic matte.

crafting

I sprayed my canvas grey to match our decor and got blue and yellow paper to match for the lettering.

This was also my first time using a Cricut.  I played around with different fonts, but ended up using the classic font.  I used different sizes and colors for the letters to break it up a bit so it didn’t look all the same.

mod podge canvas

I placed the letters on the canvas to check for sizing issues and spacing, then started the Mod Podge.  I spread a thin layer on with a paint brush, then added the first words and added another layer on top to seal it.

It was a little tricky to get the letters perfectly straight, but I like that some of the letters and words are a little off center, it makes it unique.

It didn’t take long to dry and it was ready to hang in just an hour!  I love it and it looks perfect hanging next to a picture collage of family photos above our stair case!

Letter Nn week…

We had a great week filled with learning all about the letter Nn.  We explored a squirrel’s world and their love of nuts, made nests and noodle necklaces.

N is for Nuts

Sing With Me

The Squirrel

(to the tune “I’m a Little Teapot”)

These are the brown leaves fluttering down.

And this is the tall tree bare and brown.

This is the squirrel with eyes so bright.

Hunting for nuts with all his might.

This is the hole where day by day,

Nut after nut he stores away.

When winter comes with its cold and storm,

He’ll sleep curled up, all snug and warm.

Story Time

preschool book about nuts and squirrel

We read “Nuts to You!” by Lois Ehlert. This was a fun story all about a mischievous squirrel who is on the hunt for nuts!

Arts and Crafts

walnut craft squirrel craft

We made paper walnuts to go along with our story.  The children painted brown paper and I cut the nuts in half and added a brass brad so the shell can open and close.

N is for Noodles

Sing With Me

I Love Pasta

(to the tune of “I’m a Little Tea Pot”)

I love pasta shapes, yes, I do,

Noodles and twists are but a few.

Then there’s spaghetti and bow ties,

Wheels and macaroni, any size.

Cook up the pasta, yum, yum, yum

I just love pasta in my tum.

Hand out the forks, and now let’s eat,

I say pasta is a special treat!

Nyle Noodle

(to the tune “The Farmer in the Dell”)

Nyle Noodle likes to dine.

His noodles taste so fine.

He looks for letter N to eat

And then the number nine!

Story Time

We read “More Spaghetti I Say!” by Rita Golden Gelman.  I love this story and have had it a long time.  It’s a fun tale all about a funny monkey who stuffs himself with spaghetti.

Arts and Crafts

noodle necklaces

For our noodle theme, we made noodle necklaces.  The children colored them with markers and then they strung them onto ribbon to make a necklace.

N is for Nest

Story Time

We read “My Nest is Best”by P.D. Eastman.  This is a fun interactive tale all about a boastful bird who is proud of his nest making skills.

Sing With Me

Little Bird

(to the tune:”Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)
Little bird, little bird, fly around,
Up to the sky, down to the ground.
Little bird, little bird, flap your wings.
Open your beak and sweetly sing.
Little bird, little bird, fly to your nest.
Now it is time to take a rest.

Arts and Crafts

nest craft

We made our own nests out of crinkle paper and paper eggs.

Lions start with L…

We learned all about letter Ll and Lions!  It was so much fun acting and roaring like the king of the jungle.  We watched a clip of real lions to hear their great roars up close.  Click here to hear the lion.

We read the fun story “We’re Going on a Lion Hunt” by Joe Mathieu.  This story is similar to the song and book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.  The children loved this story and helped act it out as I read.  And we read the beautiful adaptation of Aesop’s fable “The Lion and the Mouse” by Jerry Pinkney.  This story tells an amazing lesson that even the meek and small are capable of greatness.

Sing With Me

Larry Lion

(to the tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”)

Larry Lion loves letter L.

He brings L for Show and Tell.

Larry leads the class today

As the leopards laugh and play.

Larry lets them take a turn

Cheering L so they can learn!

Poetry

I’m a Lion

I love to sleep out in the sun,

And chase other animals just for fun.

In all the jungle, I’m number one!

I’m a lion!

Arts and Crafts

hand print lion craft

We made hand print lions by printing the children’s hands in a circle then adding the face in the middle.
