U is for Umbrella…

There was a lot to learn about the letter Uu and umbrellas today.  We talked about how umbrellas are helpful…they keep you dry, they keep you shady when it’s sunny, they protect food from the sun too.   We read quite a few stories about umbrellas of all kinds, made a craft and sang a song too.

Rain on My Umbrella

(to the tune of Frere Jaques)

Drip, drip, drop, drop

Drip, drip, drop, drop

Drip, drip, drop

Drip, drip, drop

Rain on my umbrella

Rain on my umbrella

Never stops.

Drip, drip, drop!

preschool poem about umbrellasThis is the poem Beneath a Blue Umbrella by Jack Pretlusky. This tells the story of an umbrella used to protect fruit from the sun on a cart.

preschool book about umbrellas

We read The Umbrella by Jan Brett.  I am a huge fan of Jan Brett and this book has beautiful illustrations of the jungle.  The story is similar to The Hat by Jan Brett, but in this story the animals all pile into an umbrella that a little boy leaves on the jungle floor.  His umbrella is special because he has made it from the leaves and vines that are found in the rainforest.  We also learned all about the unusual animals that live in a rainforest: toucan, quetzal, tapir and kinkajou.

We also read Umma Ungka’s Umbrella by Barbara deRubertis.  This book is full of words that have the letter Uu in them.  And we learned an Ungka is a type of monkey too!

preschool umbrella craftWe painted templates of umbrellas with water colors.  I thought the water colors would be so pretty and give the umbrellas a “watery” look to them.

preschool umbrella craftI love the way they look hanging on the wall!  It really looks like it is raining when the raindrops sway and blow in the breeze of the air vents.
